It’s been a little more than a month since the Westside’s newest school, Hollis Innovation Academy, began its second school year, but the faculty, staff and students have been busy!

Check out some of the highlights from Hollis’ first 40 days of the 2017-18 academic year.

Hollis Celebrates Hollis Heroes at First Community Meeting of the School Year: 

Hollis Innovation Academy, known for strongly upholding its “Six Habits of Hollis” (collaboration, communication, creativity, empathy, perseverance, and self-discipline), celebrated its Hollis Heroes during the first Community Meeting of the school year. Hollis Heroes are students who are voted by their peers for best exhibiting one of the Six Habits. Self-Discipline was the focus during the month of August, and students were honored during the Hollis Heroes Luncheon, sponsored by Chick-fil-A Foundation. They will also be rewarded with a field trip to the King Center and an upcoming pep rally with the Atlanta Falcons.

During the school’s energetic Community Meeting, students who have not been absent since the beginning of the school year were also recognized, and they will enjoy a pep rally with the Atlanta Falcons, along with the Hollis Heroes.

Vision To Learn Celebration

Since the beginning of the school year, Vision To Learn, a non-profit organization that provides free eye exams and free eyeglasses to students in low-income communities, has been conducting free eye exams for students at Hollis Innovation Academy. During a celebratory program in August, 49 students received free eyeglasses after choosing the colors and designs for their frames. Atlanta Public Schools Superintendent Meria Carstarphen, District 2 Atlanta Public Schools Board Member Byron Amos and Vision To Learn CEO and Director John Kim were among many in attendance and helped present glasses to the students.

This initiative was made possible through the partnership of Atlanta Public Schools, the Atlanta Hawks, Chick-fil-A Foundation, Learn4Life, and Chan Zuckerberg Initiative.
