Partner News: Hollis Innovation Academy Makes Big Gains in Student Achievement
This week’s #StoryofImpact comes from our partners at Hollis Innovation Academy.
The K-5 Atlanta Public School has reached another significant milestone!
After only its second year in existence, the school has increased its College and Career Ready Performance Index (CCRPI) score by 18.9 points, according to results released by the Georgia Department of Education in early November.
What is the CCRPI you might ask? It is the statewide education accountability system that measures schools and districts on how well students have learned the knowledge and skills outlined in the state-adopted content standards in English Language Arts, mathematics, science, and social studies.
Setting the Foundation for Success
Since the school’s opening in August of 2016, leadership, faculty, and staff at Hollis have committed to implementing the EL Education Expeditionary STEM Curriculum – a rigorous, multi-disciplinary, standards-based approach to learning. In this model, students use STEM as a tool to grapple with solutions to real-world problems relevant to the community.
Since the beginning of the 2017-18 school year, Hollis has also greatly benefited from a co-teaching model in the classroom, which creates opportunities for small group and one-on-one instruction. This instructional model is made possible through a $16.4 million donation from Westside Future Fund, Coca-Cola Foundation, and SunTrust Bank.
Hollis’ success has not gone unnoticed. In fact, it’s been so significant that it’s caught the attention of national publication ED Week Magazine. Read more about the hard work that led to this increase in student academic achievement.
