With back-to-school activities in full swing, August on Atlanta’s Historic Westside was filled with exciting happenings.

On Tuesday, Aug. 6, the Atlanta Police Department came together with Westside residents for the annual National Night Out celebration and block party. The event promoted police and community partnerships, crime prevention awareness, safety and neighborhood unity, all while wishing local children a safe return to school with music, art, food, games, partner exhibits and more. National Night Out symbolized giving neighborhood crime and drugs a going-away party.

Classes began Aug. 12 at Atlanta Technical College’s (ATC) Center for Workforce Innovation (CWI), an innovative program to fill the critical needs in Atlanta’s workforce. CWI provides students in the skilled trades, IT and aviation programs with resources from career coaching to academic support. Dr. Victoria Seals hosted a Coffee with the President event for high school representatives to learn more about ATC’s Dual Enrollment program. Additionally, ATC held New Student Convocation ceremonies recognizing students’ commitment to excellence as they transform their lives through the power of technical education.

Hollis Innovation Academy unveiled a newly renovated Media Center, as well as the newly debuted, state-of-the-art Lü Interactive Playground, donated by AT&T in partnership with Westside Future Fund, on Aug. 16. The playground supports STEM-based education for students. Additionally, the Hollis Blue Hawks football team played their first official game against the King Middle School Jaguars on Aug. 24, while the Lady Blue Hawks softball team played their first game against Sylvan Middle School on Aug. 26, and though neither game ended in a victory, both teams are looking forward to a great season.
